As we like to say, “Great things are happening at Webster!” While many public elementary schools in Southern California face declining enrollments, our student population has remained steady and this year has even increased.
The foundation starts with the committment from school leadership, teachers, and support staff to put students first. The Webster staff puts special emphasis on building relationships with our students, families, and community members. Meanwhile, our STEAM magnet has increased the school’s focus around integrating science and the arts into all parts of the curriculum. From TK through 5th grade, you will find that our STEAM units and writing genres are vertically aligned with common components that start with Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards. Our Community Schools grant provides a system of support and connection between the school and our families.
Our collective efforts have resulted in an improved sense of community and purpose. Family events like STEAM Night, our annual Gallery Walk, Family Fridays, and Open House are joyful, well-attended events. In addition, Webster has seen our test scores increase in Math, ELA, and Science. There are 114 public elementary schools in San Diego County with an 80% or higher percentage of students qualifying for Free or Reduced-Price Meals. Using a metric that measures income vs expected test scores, Webster ranked 2nd among those schools.
The lyrics from our school song “Ode to the Wise Owls” are a wonderful summary of our school’s mission:
We are the Owls from Webster Elementary
safety, respect, and responsibility
artists and scientists who help our community
We’re full STEAM ahead!
